JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Gov. Jay Nixon has appointed the former mayor of Glasgow to be a commissioner for a mid-Missouri county.

Seventy-three-year-old Howard McMillan was picked Wednesday to be the western district commissioner for Howard County. McMillan has served four terms as the Glasgow mayor, with the most recent term ending in 2008. He also has served on the city council and resigned his position to accept the appointment.

McMillan replaces Howard Black, who resigned from the county commission effective Oct. 30. Nixon, a Democrat, says he is confident McMillan will do well because he has been active in civic affairs.
