KEOKUK, IA. -- A dream that started about a decade ago has now become a reality.
The Keokuk Humane Society will open a no-kill facility Monday. The shelter can house 20 dogs and 25 cats. It's equipped with a grooming room and an area to quarantine animals before they move into the general population lodging areas.
Humane Society secretary Jane Peters told us she believes this shelter will benefit the community by help controlling the pet population.
"It's going to be a no kill, which we need cash donations and donations of food and toys, but we're trying to do a no-kill shelter like I said and spay and neuter animals,"Peters said.
The Humane Society will be ready to take in animals Monday.
Donations are needed to keep the shelter open. Dog and cat food, cat litter and treats are needed.
For more information, you can call the shelter at (319) 524-3816. Pets from the shelter can also be found on www.petfinder.com
