The day after Thanksgiving has been dubbed Black Friday, and is one of the busiest shopping days of the year for retailers.
The following Monday, today, has been dubbed Cyber Monday, a day when online retailers see a surge in business.
KHQA went behind the scenes at a couple of local on line retailers to see what the day is like for them.
It's been one busy day at the warehouse of Your Electronic Warehouse and Discount Golf World in Quincy. Crews have been busy loading this semi full of future Christmas presents. Discount Golf World does about 50 percent of its business on line. For Your Electronic Warehouse, it's more like 98 percent.
"We get to this time of year, it's all crunch time now. Every day is a very important day to a retailer. We don't want to give too many of them back for sure," says Matt Boudreau, the Director of E-commerce with Your Electronic Warehouse, and Discount Golf World.
Still Cyber Monday is a big day for on-line retailers, and it keeps getting bigger.
"It's been growing year over year. We've seen a 20 percent increase over the last two to three years. Year over year," says Boudreau.
Part of the reason it gets bigger is people are becoming more comfortable with internet shopping.
"In the early days of the internet, there were some discrepancies. We've come a long way. There are now secured sites, and fraud checks to protect the merchant and the consumer," says Boudreau.
And you may be impressed to know how quickly things work here. When an order comes in online, it's usually loaded on a truck in three to six hours.
"A guy has to approve the order, then it goes to another department that allocates it to the warehouse. Then the warehouse loads in on a truck," says Boudreau.
That also helps cut down on mistakes, because at least three people touch the product before it's shipped. Depending on the which company ships the package, it can be on your doorstep in a matter of days. So, eventually it may come on a big red sleigh, but chances are a yellow fork truck had something to do with the process.
Cyber Monday isn't the busiest online shopping day.
Matt Boudreau tells KHQA that day is usually ten to 14 days before Christmas...your last chance to order online and get in time for the holiday.
