JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri farmers who own the best land for growing crops could pay higher taxes on their property while those with less desirable plots might get a tax cut.
The Missouri State Tax Commission has approved new productive values for agriculture land. The values are used to calculate property taxes and are determined by evaluating the potential earnings on the land through agriculture.
The state's farms are divided into eight categories based on land quality. The tax commission Tuesday increased the value for farms in the four best categories, lowered values for three lesser categories and kept the worst category the same.
The new land values would take effect Jan. 1, 2011, unless lawmakers reject them.
