Teen charged with murder gets new lawyer

(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri teenager charged with killing her 9-year-old neighbor has new lawyers.

The Jefferson City News Tribune reported that Alyssa Bustamante is now represented by the state Public Defender System's "Capital Litigation" division office in Columbia.

The 15-year-old is charged in Cole County as an adult with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 killing of Elizabeth Kay Olten. Attorneys Donald Catlett and Charles Moreland of the Columbia office filed their appearance in the case this past week.

Bustamante previously had been represented by Jan King, who heads the Public Defenders' Cole County office. If convicted of the murder charge, the maximum punishment available for Bustamante is life in prison without any possibility for parole.
