HANNIBAL, MO. -- The following is a press release from the City of Hannibal Police Department:

The Hannibal Police Department (HPD) will be hosting a Citizen’s Academy starting March 4th.

Classes will be held each Thursday from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Those interested in attending can pick-up an application at the front desk of the Hannibal Police Department or download a copy on-line at www.hannibalpd.com.

It has been over a decade since we held our last citizen’s academy. We have had over the years several inquiries as to when we will hold another one and it is often mentioned in our community surveys” stated Chief Lyndell Davis.

We are changing the format this time around from teaching in-depth about the various reports and history of law enforcement to a more practical or in other words “hands-on” experience for the attendees.

This change allows us to reduce the number of weeks of the academy to seven (7). There have been so many changes in law enforcement since we last hosted an academy and the biggest change is in technology.

Our weaponry has advanced and offers the officers better options especially in the less lethal area. In other areas you have the red-light cameras, CVSA (Computer Voice Analyzer), In-car Video(tapeless/wireless), LiveScan (Inkless Digital fingerprinting) and more.

We also will have two nights of allowing the attendees to conduct simulated traffic stops, respond to burglary in-progress, robbery and domestic violence type calls”.
