23 rounds fired, 16 fired at MPD officers

MACOMB, ILL. -- I want to show you a little bit of Wednesday's crime scene. Most of the windows along the storefront were completely shattered when shots were fired. Most of them are boarded up now. I spoke to Farm King family owner, Rick Severs. He told me the red tape you see scattered along the storefront marks the spot of a bullet hole.

Macomb police say 19-year-old Jonathan Labbe {luh-*BAY*} fired approximately 16 shots when police tried to enter the store, out of a total of 23 rounds. Police do *not* believe he was trying to shoot at anyone in particular. They also say they don't know if Labbe went to the store with the intention of taking his own life.

Macomb Police Chief Curt Barker told KHQA Labbe entered the store with a gun, and got the ammunition after he entered the store.

"He requested ammo, the store clerk requested an ID. As soon as he gained access, that's when he grabbed them," said Chief Barker.

"He just asked to unlock the gun cases. He wanted our ammunition and he says, you don't want to be a part of this," said Farm King Manager Jeff Nimrick.

Farm King store manager Jeff Nimrick played a pivotal role in this incident, as you hear on the 911 tape. His quick action may have helped prevent more injuries, even deaths.

"Anytime you have a situation where there's no injuries, it's good. I feel that everyone worked together, the community, did a great job," said Chief Barker.
