WHEATON, ILL. (AP) -- Spring isn't only about blooming flowers and sunshine.
One of the less pleasant sides of the improved weather is increased activity of ticks. And health officials are warning people to take precautions against tick-borne diseases.
Ticks become most active when the ground temperature is above 40 degrees. And if infected, they can transmit illnesses such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.
The DuPage County Health Department says people should be on alert for rashes or any unexplained illnesses following a tick bite.
If they suspect anything, they should consult a doctor.
Left untreated, some tick-borne diseases can be fatal.
Among the precautions people can take to avoid getting bitten is to check for ticks on their body often when outside.
