Suspect charged with 1st degree murder

HANNIBAL, MO. -- -- Update April 19, 2010--

A Hannibal murder suspect allegedly admitted to killing his fiance and asked others to help him dispose of the gun, ammunition and clothes he was wearing at the time.

This man forty-year-old Calvin Duane Pettey is charged with shooting 32-year-old "Sandi" Fugate last Thursday. The two had been engaged for about a year and were to be married last Saturday.  His fiance Sandi Fugate was found dead in the basement of her home on Iowa Street on Thursday.

According to the Hannibal Courier Post, in a probable cause statement filed Monday in Marion County Circuit Court a witness told police Pettey told her he killed Sandy and needed her to help get rid of the evidence. The witness also reported Pettey wanted the ammunition thrown in a body of water because they may have his prints.

Pettey is back in court Friday and is currently being held in the Marion County jail on a one million dollar cash only bond.

--Update April 18, 2010--

The man accused of shooting his fiance days before their wedding will face the judge later this week.  Marion County States Attorney Tom Redington tells KHQA 40 year-old Calvin Duane Pettey will be arraigned by video conferencing this Friday.

Police arrested Pettey Friday for the death of his fiance 32 year-old Sandi Fugate. Pettey has been charged with 1st Degree murder and is currently being held in the Marion County jail on a one million dollar cash only bond.

Fugate was found dead in the basement of her home on Iowa Street on Thursday.

We also know more about this young mother tonight. Fugate had a daughter from a previous marriage and was employed by General Mills in Hannibal. People who knew her say she loved spending time with family and friends. She was set to marry Pettey Saturday.

The James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is handling funeral arrangements for Sandy Fugate.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 20, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, Missouri.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, April 19, 2010 at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.

--Saturday April 17, 2010--

An arrest has been made in the death of Hannibal woman this week.

The Marion County Sheriff's department confirmed for KHQA Saturday evening that Calvin Duane Pettey was arrested on Friday as the suspect in the death of his fiance 32 year old Sandi Fugate.

Pettey has been charged with 1st Degree murder.

He is currently in the Marion County jail on a 1 million dollar cash only bond.

Sandi Fugate was found dead in her home on Iowa Street on Thursday by her mother.

On Friday Marion County Coroner Peggy Porter confirmed to KHQA that the death is being considered a homicide.

The cause of death appears to be a gunshot wound.

Porter says that it may be up to 6 weeks before autopsy results are available.

Sandi Fugate and Calvin Pettey had gotten a marriage license in Marion County, and were planning to get married today.

Fugate had a child from a previous relationship.
