TROY, MO. (AP) -- Residents of the eastern Missouri community of Troy are on edge after an apparent abduction attempt.

Police say that as two sisters, ages 7 and 10, were trying to find their dog on Tuesday a man drove up in a van, got out and grabbed for one of the girls.

The girls ran away, screaming, and the suspect drove away.

Police were searching for a white man with a triangle-shaped goatee in a full-size dark green van.

The incident comes just weeks after 4-year-old Alisa Maier was abducted in Louisiana, Mo., about 30 miles north of Troy.

Alisa was found safe a day later in Fenton, where her abductor dropped her off.

The suspect, Paul S. Smith of Hawk Point, also near Troy, killed himself as police approached him for questioning.
