MATOON, ILL. (AP) -- The leader of the local economic development group that helped make Mattoon part of FutureGen says the town needs time to decide whether it still wants to be part of the project.

But Angela Griffin also says she isn't bothered by a demand from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin that the town respond by the end of the week.

She says Durbin deserves credit for helping keep the clean-coal project alive.

Durbin says the Department of Energy needs to find a new carbon storage site if Mattoon isn't interested.

Until last week FutureGen included a power plant to be built in Mattoon.

The Department of Energy now wants to retrofit a plant across the state in Meredosia.

Mattoon would store carbon dioxide from that plant.

U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson says his request to meet with Energy Secretary Steven Chu about the changes has been turned down.
