CHICAGO (AP) -- Things are really heating up in Illinois.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory for portions of central and all of southern Illinois through Thursday.

Temperatures in the 90s are expected in the afternoons and early evenings this week producing heat indices of between 100 and 110 degrees.

Heat indices could top 110 on Tuesday.

The advisory issued Monday included more than 40 Illinois counties.

Weather officials say the "dangerously hot" temperatures mean people have to take precautions, particularly children and the elderly.

The Health Care Council of Illinois suggests wearing loose-fitting and light colored clothing as well as hats and sunglasses.

The council also suggests limiting outdoor time.
