QUINCY, ILL. -- The Adams County Health Department has confirmed its first case of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus. KHQA spoke with Lee Mueller with the Adams County Health Department. He says late last Friday, the health department identified the West Nile Virus on the South side of Quincy, on South 24th Street.
Mueller says crews began setting up traps around the city June first and will continue to test for the virus into mid-September. We asked Mueller what precautions people can take to keep the virus away.
"Get rid of the things that can hold standing water because they lay their eggs in there. And if we can eliminate those breeding sources, we can eliminate the mosquitoes, themselves," said Mueller.
Mueller also says to change out the water in pools and bird baths about once a week. Wear bug spray and if the weather allows, long sleeves. He says August and September are prime months for the spread of the West Nile Virus.
