Want to consolidate officers of comptroller and treasurer

QUINCY, ILL. -- The Illinois republican nominees for comptroller and treasurer have a plan that could save taxpayers more than $10 million.

Judy Baar Topinka and Dan Rutherford are running for those offices.

They are traveling across the state this week to gain support for consolidating those offices.

They say efficient office operations and improved investments could save Illinois tax payers more than $12 million a year.

"Now usually people ask, 'well what about oversight? If there's only one office how are you going to keep track of each other?' Actually, better. Because now we'll be under one roof," said Topinka, nominee for Illinois state comptroller.

To make this a reality a state constitutional amendment is needed.

A three-fifths majority vote is needed to put that amendment on the 2012 ballot.

If that passes, the consolidation would be voted on in the 2014 election.
