DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Alliant Energy has asked Iowa utility regulators to raise Iowa electric rates by $150 million.

The Iowa Utilities Board is taking up the request during a four-day regulatory hearing this week.

The Des Moines Register on Tuesday reports that Alliant's Interstate Power and Light subsidiary says it needs the 13 percent increase mainly to cover rising transmission costs, new investments in wind energy and environmental controls at its Lansing power plant.

The request follows a 7 percent rate increase finalized by state regulators in January.

The Iowa Utilities Board hearing, which began on Monday, is expected to last through Thursday.

The Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate opposes the increase.
