ADAMS COUNTY, ILL. -- In your KHQA Safe Family Report, the Adams County Health Department has confirmed it third case of pertussis in the area. It's the first time in two years the county has experienced what the state now considers an outbreak.

"Every year, we have some pertussis cases. But if there are two or more cases, the state would consider that an outbreak," said Karen Spring, a registered nurse with the health department.

Pertussis is easily transmitted from person to person, through actions like coughing, sneezing or just talking. Early symptoms include runny nose and coughs lasting for more than three weeks. In young children, the symptoms can become worse leading to hospitalization.

So what can you do prevent whooping cough?

The Adams County Health department asks parents to be sure and check that your child's vaccine records are complete. And make sure you are vaccinated.

The health department will hold a drive-through clinic Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m
