QUINCY, ILL. -- Twoyears ago, one local couple lost their baby boy to a birth defect called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Sunday, that couple turned their heartbreak into hope for other families affected by the disease.

Rome and Tiffany Frericks hosted the second annual Cadan's Halloween Carnival.

Fun and games filled the Knights of Columbus grounds to raise money and awareness for a disease that kills 50 percent of those diagnosed.

"He changed our lives forever and I wanted to make sure that his life wasn't in vain and that more is done so that other families don't have to go through that because he should have had a chance at life and I want other babies to have a chance at life and I want other families to rejoice in having them home with them," said Tiffany Frericks.

Two families whose children have survived CDH were there today.

Anna was born a few months ago and Gus is two years old.

Gus and his family came from Effingham, Illinois for the carnival.

His mom hope the money donated to research will help find not only a cure, but a cause of the disease as well.

"Gus was born with CDH so its very important to see a cure and a cause of why it did happen so more people don't have to sufferthe way Gus has and the way we have and the Frericks and I just think it'll be great to know how it was caused and how to treat it," said Jill Emmerich-Ginder.

The money raised goes to St. Louis Children's hospital for CDH research.
