Eating fish makes you smart

Can eating certain foods improve your IQ?

According to an age old myth they most certainly can.

For this KHQA Safe Family Report, Jarod Wells asked some Blessing Rieman College of Nursing students to uncover the truth.

You've always heard that eating fish makes you smart. Is this true or false?

BRCN SeniorMolly Welton said, "Well we found it to be true, especially in 3 and 4 year olds because fish, especially oily fish such as salmon, contains high contents of Omega 3 fatty acids, which also contain DHA and that can be beneficial for brain development, cognition and also visual acuity."

A Beverly Hills pediatrician says fish is extremely beneficial in the first two years of life, but is helpful up to three or four.

BRCN Senior Jaison Kuriakose said, "In fact a 2008 study indicated just those findings in 4 year olds that were given fish oil supplements. Now if your little one doesn't like fish, other choices include avocado, walnuts and canola oil that do contain Omega 3 fatty acids."

The four year olds that were given the fish oil supplements in that 2008 study had an increase in vocabulary and comprehension.
