HANNIBAL, MO. -- Two Hannibal men have been charged in connection with an assault on a law enforcement officer from December 14.
On that day, an officer with the Hannibal Police Department was called to the 500 Block of Virginia Street at about 7:30 a.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle.
According to officers reports, a vehicle was running in the area and a male was behind the wheel and appeared to be asleep, but the vehicle was in gear and when the officer attempted to get his attention the driver woke up and began to drive away.
Also stated in the report was that the driver drove toward the officer in an attempt to assault him before fleeing the scene and the officer had to get out of the way of the vehicle.
No injuries were reported.
A short time later, the van that the suspect had been driving was found parked in the 400 block of North Arch.
Officers attempted to make contact with an occupant of one of the apartments where it was believed that the suspect may have gone. The occupant of the apartment denied that the suspect had been there.
In an un-related incident the same two men were contacted in Pike County, Missouri on December 16 and during this investigation, information supporting the incident that happened in Hannibal came to light and the Hannibal Police Department was able to obtain criminal arrest warrants for the two men involved.
The first individual, Charles J. Dean, 31, of Hannibal, is charged with a Class B Felony of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (2nd Degree) and his bond is set at $100,000 cash only. Dean is being held in the Marion County Jail.
The other male is identified as Jeremain L. Johnson, 31, of Hannibal. He is charged with a Class D Felony of Hindering Prosecution and his bond is set at $25,000 cash only. Johnson is also being held in the Marion County Jail.
The Pike County Missouri Sheriffs Department assisted in the investigation.
