NEW CANTON, ILL. -- 48-year-old Todd C. Nelson of New Canton, Ill. was arrested in his home in the 100 block of Church Street when the Pike County Sheriff's Office executed a court authorized search warrant.

Officers seized over 30 marijuana plants which were being grown in the house and are believed to have a street value of nearly $10,000.  Also seized at the time of the search were numerous items of paraphernalia and a great deal of horticulture material used in the production of cannabis sativa plants.

Nelson was lodged at the Pike County Jail on charges of Production of Cannabis Plants, Possession of Cannabis, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Nelson remains lodged without bond pending court appearance.

Sheriff Paul F. Petty was quick to commend his staff.  “This individual has been in our county for approximately six months.  I consider that just long enough to set up his operation, but not long enough to cause any damage to our communities.  I commend those working diligently during the holiday season to ensure our community is a little safer”.

State’s Attorney J. Frank McCartney who was extremely involved in the investigation also commented, “These types of cases are what puts a dent in the amount of illegal drugs which are enroute to our streets, schools, and communities.  Although we don’t like to see them encroaching into our back yard, we also will continue to be diligent in identifying those in our communities who are attempting to be a part of this lifestyle”.
