JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Missouri schools are due a $255 million state funding increase next year. But they're unlikely to get it.
Gov. Jay Nixon's budget director said Tuesday he won't recommend the full amount of funding called for by the formula that distributes money to K-12 public schools.
Schools are budgeted to get $3 billion during the current school year. About $247 million of that is federal economic stimulus money.
State officials will have to find a way to replace that federal money just to keep funding flat for the next school year.
Budget documents reviewed by The Associated Press show it would take a $254.6 million increase to fully fund schools next year.
Administrators and teacher groups say they are hoping just to avoid cuts.
