DES MOINES, IOWA -- Some state jobs in Iowa are not safe.

Newly elected governor Terry Branstad has announced that hundreds of state workers will be layed off as part of a strategy to balance the state budget.

On Tuesday Branstad says that he will create a new state budget as quickly as possible that would include some deep cuts.

Most of the jobs are positions that were hired during Chet Culver's only term in office.

The DesMoinesRegister.com says that Branstad, a Republican, placed the blame for that prospect squarely on Democrat Chet Culver's administration, saying its "badly mismanaged' approach to running government led to unnecessary hires.
