QUINCY, ILL. -- The American Red Cross stands ready and willing to assist following the earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami.

The Japanese Red Cross Society has mobilized eleven teams to heavily-damaged communities to provide assessments and first aid.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross stands ready to provide assistance as needed. So far, Japan's Red Cross has asked for monetary donations only.

"It's extremely expensive to ship goods overseas and so obviously the Japanese Red Cross is going to be looking at surrounding countries for physical donations and support first and foremost. And if there are additional needs, then they may call on the Red Cross," said Kate Rhoads, the American Red Cross director for disaster services in Quincy.

How you can donate: www.redcross.org or text "Red Cross" to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Also, the best way to contact or locate U.S. citizens living or traveling in Japan is to contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at this number:1-888-407-4747.
