HANNIBAL, MO. -- Police are investigating what is being described as a shot being fired near the Eugene Field Elementary School.

Hannibal School's superintendent Dr. Jill Janes tells KHQA that teachers heard the sound while outside during recess.

Janes says teachers brought the children back into the school and called police. Children will have recess inside the school for the remainder of the day unless police give the school the all-clear.

Janes says the school has a locked door procedure and that no other steps are being taken at this time.

Hannibal police continue to investigate the incident and we'll bring you updates as they are released, so check this story later and watch KHQA's News at Five, KHQA's Evening News at 6 p.m. and KHQA's Late News at 10 p.m.
