MACOMB, ILL -- A cooperative grocery store will soon be coming to Macomb.

The Food Co-op Initiative awarded Macomb, Ill. with a seed grant worth $10,000.  The group is a non-profit foundation that was created to provide resources and support for communities that want to start new food co-ops.

The store will offer locally grown produce to the community and surrounding areas, allowing stable access to healthy food.

By the fall of 2012, the store hopes to be up and running.  They are still in the early stages of planning.

Macomb was 1 of 14 communities that was awarded the seed money to start the store.

They have to raise 1 million dollars, with 40 to 50 percent of that coming from co-op owners.

Would you prefer to frequent farmer's markets and co-op grocery markets before chain grocery stores?  Tell us why or why not either below or on our Facebook page here.
