The body of what looks to be a female was found in the Mississippi River Sunday evening near Winfield, Missouri.

A trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says the body was badly decomposed and could take weeks to identify once an autopsy is conducted.

The body was found 7 miles north of the Winfield Lock and Dam, at the 254 mile marker, around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Fox2Now out of St. Louis reports that detectives have now switched their attention to a missing persons case near the same area where the body was found.

They are looking for Sherri Jane Wood, 50, who's property was located next to the Mississippi River at the end of Hwy. P and Fox2Now says it's been confirmed that relatives found a suicide note at Wood's residence written by her.

They will continue to work towards confirming the identity of the body, so check back here for any new details.
