Do you bite your nails?  Do you paint them?

No matter how you upkeep your fingernails, they can offer a window to many health issues.

If you have pale nails, or white nails, it can just be aging ... but it could also be a sign of anemia or malnutrition.  WebMD says it can also point to congestive heart failure and liver disease.

Yellow nails could mean fungal infections, which is the most common nail problem or disorder seen.  Other things your doctor could check for are thyroid diseaselung diseasediabetes or psoriasis says the same website.

Cracking or splitting nails that are yellowish in color can also sometimes be due to fungal infections.

If you are not getting enough oxygen, your nails could take on a blue tint.

Dark lines or black discoloration of the nail could come from slamming your thumb in the door or from melanoma, so you should always have this checked by a doctor.

Lastly, if you just can't keep from biting your nails, it could a sign of anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder.

CNN's Susan Hendricks reported that good hygiene can prevent infections. You can do that by keeping your nails clean and dry to help prevent them from splitting or cracking.
