QUINCY, ILL. -- A 12-year-old boy called 911 Friday morning to report a fire he started and could not extinguish.

The boy admitted to Quincy Fire Department investigators that he had been playing with a lighter on the couch at 828 1/2 North 4th Street.

He tried to put out the fire with a water bottle nearby, but when the fire escalated, he grabbed the phone to call for help.  The call came in at 2:37 a.m.

QFD says the living room was destroyed and the rest of the house sustained heavy smoke and water damage.
