PALMYRA, MO. -- Some people call Highway 61 near Palmyra unsafe, and MODOT has a plan to fix it, but don't hold your breath on work starting anytime soon.

Road construction on U.S. 61 in Palmyra will take longer than expected.

The Missouri Department of Transportation received only one bid from a contractor.

And that bid was a lot higher than MoDOT had estimated.

The project includes safety improvements on three intersections along U-S 61 at Main Cross, Ross, and Thompson Streets.

Construction was supposed to begin in the middle of this month and be done by December.

Project Manager Chris Knapp says they will have to wait until next year to get started on the safety improvements.

"I think it's getting late in the year and contractors have plenty of work right now. They would have had to use extra crews and overtime to fit it into their schedule so I think that's probably the primary reason. Since the contractors will have the entire 20-12 construction season, we think they'll have more time to schedule the project and we'll hope to see more bids and better bids," says Knapp.

MoDOT hopes to have the project done by next year.
