GREENE COUNTY, ILL. -- A southwestern Illinois woman has been sentenced to two years of probation and a $1,500 fine after pleading guilty to nine counts alleging she unlawfully disposed of dead horses under her care.

Stacey Kempf, 42, of Jerseyville entered the pleas on Friday in Greene County. As part of a deal with prosecutors, she agreed to have no animal ownership while on probation. Kempf also pleaded guilty to six counts of unlawful violation of animal ownership duties.

Prosecutors dropped 15 other misdemeanor counts that included nine accusing Kempf of starving or abusing the animals.

Authorities say the misconduct took place between last December and the end of February. Kempf has agreed to relinquish 26 surviving horses, many of them found in various stages of neglect.
