The Quincy Public Library will kick-off the 2011 Big Read featuring the dark genius of Edgar Allan Poe just one day shy of the anniversary of his death, Thursday, October 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the John Wood Mansion. Those who attend will receive a FREE COPY of the book Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe and get a free lunch!
Quincy Public Library received a grant to host The Big Read in the Quincy community.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
Quincy Public Library is one of 76 not-for-profits to be recommended for a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2011 and June 2012.
The event in Quincy Thursday is featuring Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Activities will take place from October 6th-November 4th, 2011 and include a film festival, lecture series and book discussions.
"We are pleased to continue the Big Read tradition in Quincy again this year. The Big Read would not be possible without the support of the community and our many partners and sponsors" said Nancy Dolan, Executive Director of the Quincy Public Library.
NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman said, "Since 2006, nearly three million Americans have attended a Big Read event, more than 39,000 volunteers have participated locally, and nearly 27,000 community partner organizations have been involved. The Big Read's success depends on these commitments of time, energy, and enthusiasm and I look forward to seeing these 76 communities come together in celebration of a great work of literature."
