Here's a KHQA Safe Family Crime alert from the Hannibal Police Department ... be on the lookout for a new forged check postal scam that looks like you've won a sweepstakes.

The letter originates out of Canada.

It states that you've won a large monetary prize through Reader's Digest.

Included is an "advanced" check to be used for insurance, taxes and other fees.

If you were to follow the instructions and cash the check, you would owe the entire amount of the check to the bank once the forgery is discovered.

If you receive one of these letters and checks, you're asked to destroy it or turn it over to police.
