Do you know them well enough to know if they have a criminal background?
A new law that is now in effect in Illinois lets you check your neighborhood to see if there is a convicted murderer living nearby. The Illinois state registry to keep track of first-degree murder convicts has topped 500 registrants as of April.
The website is the Illinois State Police Child Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry, and it works similarly to the state's sex offender website.
You can type in specific names or you can do a neighborhood search by typing in your address.
The law is named Andrea's Law after a 19-year-old was murdered by an ex-boyfriend in 1998. That man served 12 years in prison and is now out.
Convicted murderers will stay on the list for ten years.
The website also lists those convicted of violent crimes.
