ADAMS COUNTY, ILL. -- The Adams County Sheriff's Deputy who helped track down a criminal after a car chase and standoff is getting an award.

Sgt. Joe Lohmeyer was shot in the chest in his bullet proof vest while managing to get his fellow Special Response Team members out of the way during a standoff in Kingston, Illinois last summer.

It all began last June when Lohmeyer and the Adams County Sheriff's Department pursued an Iowa man who stole a vehicle and shot a Quincy Police officer. Click here for the original story coverage.

After a chase, the man ran into an unoccupied house and held off police before killing himself.

For his efforts Lohmeyer will receive the Illinois Sheriff's Association Deputy of the Year award on February 6.
