Gardner Denver's Quincy workforce will lose 30 manufacturing positions in mid-May, the company's chief financial officer confirmed Monday.

Employees at the Quincy plant were told that their positions consolidated into a yet-unannounced facility in the Midwest, Michael Larsen, vice-president and CFO of the company said.

“This has been a very difficult decision for us,” Larsen said. “It's got nothing to do with the individual employees. We're consolidating our manufacturing footprint in North America.”

Workers at the affected facility build compressor components for locomotives.

There are roughly 40 employees who are affected by the closing of the compressor facility. Some employees are taking early retirements while others will receive severance based on their time with the company, Larsen said.

Of those affected, Larsen said that there are 10 to 15 positions in an energy pump manufacturing facility in Quincy.

The layoffs and retirements will leave the Gardner Denver's Quincy workforce at 360 employees.

Larsen stressed that the company has created 70 new jobs in Quincy over the past two years in its shared services and customer care divisions. He acknowledged that many of these positions are lower paying that some manufacturing jobs.

“It's hard to tell because of seniority,” he said. “Some our more experienced employees make more money than our new adds.”
