A former Palmyra High School teacher arrested on charges of having sex with a student made his first court appearance Friday.

Randall Shepard, 40, is charged with second-degree statutory rape, second-degree statutory sodomy and sexual contact with a student while on public school property.

The charges relate to Shepard's inappropriate sexual relations with a 16-year-old Palmyra High School student, the Missouri Highway Patrol has said.

Judge John Jackson scheduled Shepard's next hearing for March 26. Shepard appeared via video teleconference.

Shepard, of Hannibal, was arrested without incident last week and remains in the Marion County Jail on $100,000 bond.

The Highway Patrol began investigating Shepard in January. Shepard, a former assistant football coach and communication arts teacher, was placed on paid leave Jan. 22 and was fired in February.
