FORT MADISON, IOWA -- UPDATED: April 3 at 6:50 a.m.

Exactly two weeks after the death of Fort Madison's mayor, Steve Ireland, the Fort Madison City Council will decide Tuesday night how to replace his post.

Council members will decide whether to appoint someone to the position or to hold a special election.

Funeral arrangements have been made for Fort Madison's Mayor who died suddenly on Tuesday.

Steve Ireland passed away at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Visitation is Friday evening from 4:30 to 7 at King-Lynk Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the First Baptist Church with burial at the Claypoole Cemetery in Wever, Iowa.

Ireland has been a public servant for years, currently serving his fourth term as mayor.  Previously he served on the city council for more than 5 years.

Steve Ireland was 53-years-old.

Ireland's death means someone else has to take over leadership of the city.

According to the city administrator Byron Smith, the office of mayor now falls to the Mayor Pro-Tem, city councilman Brad Randolph. Brad Randolph is a current city council member.

The Mayor Pro-Tem position is an office Ireland hand-picked every year to cover meetings and events he couldn't attend.

By law the state of Iowa requires the city to fill the position within 40 days.

The city council can choose to appoint a new mayor or push it to the next election.

This is expected to be discussed at the city council's next meeting on April 3.

Funeral arrangements for Ireland are pending at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.
