QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy City Council heard a second reading of the 2012/2013 annual operating budget Monday night.

During a budget hearing before the meeting,  City Planner Chuck Bevelheimer spoke to the council.

He reported that his department has managed to decrease its operating costs by nearly 5% for the new budget year.

That cuts the budget down from more than 9 hundred thousand dollars to $879,579 dollars.

The department has also dropped its staff total from 10 to 8.

Bevelheimer said new technology will allow the department to be more efficient when it comes to tracking problems with building permits.

The council is expected to give a final reading for the proposed budget at next week's meeting.

There was also something unusual on the agenda of the council meeting.

The council gave approval to move a large building from South 24th to North 2nd street on April 20th.

The building which is more than 20-feet wide and more than 30-feet long, will travel from Harrison to 2nd street by way of 8th, Van Buren, 5th and Locust.

 The move will start at 9:00 a.m. on April 20th.

 And finally, the council also approved holding the annual Dogwood Parade on May 5th at 9:30 a.m.
