QUINCY, ILL. -- Runners and walkers laced up their tennis shoes Saturday morning for the 12th annual Bridge the Gap to Health Race.

The race funds the Quincy Catholic Charities MedAssist program. It helps leverage prescription medication for people who otherwise couldn't afford their meds.

The race began at Quincy's Clat Adams Park and included events for all ages. Participants hit the pavement for a  5k, 10k, half marathon or an un-timed leisure walk.

"This event is like our community giving itself a hug," Carrie Kimber, Bridge the Gap race director said. "This is our community helping the people in need. People in our community that need prescription drugs don't necessarily have to decide to take less or to take food instead because we have a program like this in our community."

In the past eleven years, the Bridge the Gap to Health Race has raised $10.7 million for prescription medications.

The Bridge the Gap to Health Race's mission statement is "to sustain or enhance the quality of life of our community." Proceeds from the race each year benefit the Quincy Catholic Charities MedAssist Program which provides assistance to those in our area who cannot afford their medications regardless of race, color, or religious beliefs.
