QUINCY, ILL. -- The annual JDRF Walk/Run/Ride event kicked off in the parking lot of Hy-Vee on Harrison Saturday at 11 a.m.

The yearly event allows people from all over the Tri-States to come together to show support for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Participants enjoyed a hot and sunny day as they walked through South Park. Some even rode bikes on a route through downtown Quincy.

Event organizers say that Juvenile Diabetes is not well known and their goal is not only to raise awareness but to show that kids with the condition are just like other kids.

One group in particular, nicknamed "Addison Rocks," came out to show support for Addison Reckers.

"We've been striving for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes since my daughter was diagnosed," Dawn Reckers said. "It's really tough for kids that have Type 1, they don't make any insulin so they either have to have several injections a day or they have to have an insulin pump to replace that insulin. So, it's a day in, day out job and we can't wait for that cure."

Dawn's daughter Addison was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was five-years-old.

"Hy-Vees are involved in the JDRF Walk, we are very involved as a company. We are a national sponsor," Harrison Hy-Vee Store Manager Steve Labs said. "We have raised a million dollars a year for the last four years as a company, so we thought it would be great to have this event here in Quincy and try to add to that and make even more."
