QUINCY, ILL. -- More than 250 people gathered at Moorman Park Saturday morning to support breast cancer awareness.

This was the first "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" 5K walk held in Quincy. The event raised more than seven thousand dollars. All of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society to fund breast cancer research and education.

Making Strides cost nothing to participate but donations were accepted.

Many organizers of the event are breast cancer survivors and said the turnout was touching.

"It's so heartwarming" Krista Veihl, the chairperson for Making Strides said. "I told someone this morning that 'my cup runneth over.' It's just awesome to see the support and the people that come out to support the cause and to help find a cure for us."

Organizers of the event say they're already planning next year's walk with the Quincy Park District.
