The Midwest might be cooling down from the triple digit heatwave last week, but the Illinois Department of Transportation is warning motorists to be on the lookout for buckled roads as they drive around the state.

Transportation department officials say the extreme heat affected roadway pavement around Illinois, resulting in buckling and potholes.

According to the department, there have been about 30 incidents of pavement failure on the state highway system due to high temperatures in the last two weeks.

Maintenance crews are being dispatched to identify possible pavement blowouts to make any necessary repairs. But while repairs are usually completed within a few hours, pavement breaks can cause driving hazards that can't be predicted.

You'll remember the viral video of a mini van in Wisconsin encountering such a pavement break. Click here to view that raw video from Reuters.
