The Salvation Army in Quincy and Hannibal and The Madonna House in Quincy all say they're struggling to fill food pantry shelves
The Salvation Army in Quincy and Hannibal say they're struggling to fill their food pantry shelves as well as struggling to fill food boxes for those people who need assistance.
Just when you think the shelves look bare at the Salvation Army food pantry in Quincy, in Hannibal it's even worse.
Donations have slowed to a crawl and that has put a major crunch on what the food pantry can hand out to those people who need help.
"There is no donation that is too small. If somebody had a can of pork and beans and they wanted to drop it off, I would be grateful. Because that can of pork and beans would go into a food box for a family that is struggling to buy food," Salvation Army Family Services Director Elizabeth Flynn said. "That's what we can do, we can donate."
Flynn says according to the Central Illinois Food bank, statistics show that one in four children in Adams County is food deprived.
She also says the number of people needing help has doubled from last year.
Even The Madonna House Food Pantry in Quincy is facing a struggle to fill the shelves. According to the Interum Executive Director Joanne Dedert, the food pantry is in desperate need of restocking as the food inventory is dwindling. They are in need of non-perishable food products such as pasta rice, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, vegetables, fruit, canned stews, canned marinara sauce and more.
