PALMYRA, MO. -- Palmyra students could soon take part in trap shooting competitions.
That is, if the school board agrees to approve the extracurricular activity as a part of its partnership with Future Farmers of America Tuesday evening.
Palmyra Superintendent Eric Churchwell says the school expanded the FFA's program this year with a second teacher. Churchwell says his students have showed interest in trap shooting after learning about its competitiveness amongst area schools.
"I think any time you have kids involved in extracurriculars, they're more successful. I guess the worry some people may have is you/re talking about firearms. But I see that as a positive thing because you're teaching kids about firearm safety and responsibility," Churchwell said.
If the school board approves trap shooting, Churchwell said the school would have to decide an alternative location for students to shoot off campus.
