MENDON, ILL. -- Nearly 800,000 children go missing each year, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That's more than 2,000 children every day.

Tuesday, members of the Illinois Child Identification Program (CHIP) hosted a Child ID Kit event at the Adams County Fair. They say it's extremely important to have as much information on your child as possible in case of an emergency.

Parents received a color photo, a recorded interview on CD, a DNA sample, weight information, and fingerprints for their child. Everything parents would need to help authorities find their lost child is included in this kit. At the end of the process, CHIP volunteers sealed the information in an envelope and gave it to the parents for safe keeping.

"After the parents take them home, they should be stored in a safe place. If you have a fireproof safe, that's great. If you don't have a fireproof safe, a refrigerator or freezer are well-insulated and resist fire better than a regular file cabinet. It would probably protect the information a lot better," Sgt. Scott Smith with the Adams County Sheriff's Department said.

The Adams County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, Quincy Police Department, Adams County SAFE Kids, and Payson Lodge 379 and Masons of Illinois all took part in the Child ID Kit event.

For those in Missouri, the Marion County Fair will offer a similar service during the ATV races on Wednesday, August 1 and Thursday, August 2 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. They will be located behind the grandstand and they will also give away a boy's bicycle and a girl's bicycle.
