BARRY, ILL. -- Barry residents no longer have far to travel to get in a workout.

The Western Community Center YMCA held its grand opening Wednesday.

The facility is more than just a place to break a sweat.

"We just want it to be a place where the community can gather and see each other and hang out and kind of get together and be active with each other," Branch Director of the Western Community Center YMCA, Scott Croft, said.

The Barry YMCA has been in the works for the past two years. It's a branch of the Quincy and Mt. Sterling YMCAs, but members say it's different.

"This one is unique in the fact that it's the community and really the city of Barry that started the process over a couple of years ago and the community has put so much support in fundraising and charter memberships," Croft said.

This is the only workout facility in Barry. The Y offers its 100 members so far a 2500 square foot Wellness Center, cardio machines, strength training equipment, free weights and a 2900 square foot group exercise room.

"With gas so high ... it's just right here, you can walk if you need to and you don't have to spend time traveling to go somewhere," Lorri Wharton, a Barry YMCA member said.

The new YMCA isn't just bringing Barry's community together, it's also bringing the community jobs.

"I needed a job and it was available and I think I fit perfectly into here," Ashley Kenady, a YMCA fitness instructor, said.

And now they want you.

"I say to the Barry community that it's a perfect way to kind of start leading a healthy lifestyle and improve your health for down the road," Croft said.

Family memberships are $45 per month. Adult memberships are $30 per month. Active older adult memberships are $27 per month. Teen memberships for people ages 12-18 are $15 per month.

The YMCA is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. then again from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday it's open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.
