FORT MADISON, IOWA -- A Fort Madison couple say a man broke into their home early Saturday morning and held them at knifepoint on their bedroom floor. The intruder then assaulted the female victim who managed to escape down the stairs.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Ave D, at 3:45 a.m. On the way to the location, officers observed a white male wearing dark clothes and blue jeans running away from patrol units in the north alley of the residence.

A short foot pursuit led to the arrest of the subject, 24-year-old Paul Anthony Lambert, of Fort Madison. Both victims identified Lambert. He remains in jail charged with burglary in the 1st degree and public intoxication.

According to police, Lambert appeared to have made entry through a rear window of the residence by cutting the screen and climbing inside. He'd also obtained a butcher's knife from inside the home. Officers located the knife in the alley of the residence.
