KEOKUK, IOWA -- Reports of a stranger approaching a Keokuk girl earlier this week are unfounded, according to police and school district officials.

Police Chief Dave Hinton said his department received a phone call about 4:57 p.m. Monday with details of an incident near Fulton and N. 8th streets.

“The guy asked her for a ride and asked her if she wanted some candy,” Hinton said. “She ignored the guy and walked home without incident. But none of that information has been verified.”

The Keokuk Public School District sent an automated telephone call to parents notifying them to the incident. Superintendent Tim Hood said that, despite a lack of verification, the district sent out the dispatch as a precaution.

“We want to keep parents abreast of everything that's going on,” he said.

This is the second such report in Keokuk in as many weeks.

Keokuk police put out notice Sept. 12 that a man approached a female Keokuk High School student Wednesday afternoon.

The student was walking between classes about 1 p.m. when a white male in his 60s or 70s and approached her and began asking her questions that made her uncomfortable.

Anyone with information about these incidents, or any incident of this nature, is asked to contact the Keokuk Police Department at 319-524-3132.
