KEOKUK, IOWA -- A dredging crew near Keokuk uncovered a stolen rental car at the bottom of the Mississippi River, police chief Dave Hinton said.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crew was dredging on the Keokuk waterfront Wednesday near the George M. Verity River Museum when the pumps began to spew car parts.
A dive team was sent below to investigate and found the red 2009 Chevrolet Aveo buried beneath the sediment. The car was buried so deep that a crane was required to pull it out of the water.
Hinton said the car was stolen from outside a residence at 201 N. First Street. He believes the car was a rental.
“It was pretty banged up,” Hinton said of the car.
No arrests have been made.
