QUINCY, ILL. -- The Horizons Soup Kitchen began serving the Quincy community in 2008. And it takes an army of volunteers every Monday through Friday to prepare the noon time meal that's offered.
The meal is free and between noon and one o'clock about 100 people take advantage of what's offered.
That number has grown and the executive director said she doesn't see an end in sight.
"In 2011, we served 22,000 meals here in the soup kitchen. So there are a lot of folks who would not know where to go for food if it wasn't for an organization like Horizons," Sarah Stephens said.
There are 15 churches in the Quincy area that support the soup kitchen.
Pat Rokusek has been volunteering since the soup kitchen started in 2008 and she said it's way for her and her church to give back to the community.
"That is part of our Christian upbringing. That we are willing to do things for other people And so it's an opportunity for me," Rokusek said.
Stephens said in 2011, volunteers recorded about 9,000 hours in serving at the soup kitchen and to top that number, she said they served over 22,000 hot meals.
Stephens added that the numbers drop a little in the winter because not as many people can get out.
And according to a survey conducted by Feeding America, one in four children in Adams County are unsure of the source of their next meal.
